Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
