A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
