The United Kingdom and the United States have signed a major trade agreement that will ensure zero duties on British medicine shipments being sold in the US market.

The Terms of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to increase spending on medicines through the NHS. This pledge guarantees that tariffs on these key goods will remain at nothing for a period of three years.

This agreement follows previous statements to dramatically increase tariffs on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures discussed up to double the cost.

"This agreement between the United Kingdom strengthens the worldwide climate for new treatments and establishes much-needed balance to transatlantic medicine commerce," an announcement noted.

Trade Significance

Drugs are one of the the United Kingdom's most significant export categories to the America, which is clearly the largest market for major UK drugmakers.

Statistics show that in the year prior to the third quarter, the UK exported drugs valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This amount made up a significant portion of all goods exports in that period.

"This deal safeguards jobs, boosts capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to emerge as a international leader for life sciences," a minister remarked.

Specific British Pledges

The agreement involves several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it judges new medicines to be prohibitively costly by a quarter.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a goal to increase overall NHS spending on treatments from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the coming ten years.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount drug companies must refund to the NHS to prevent overspending will be capped at 15%. Previously, rebates topped 20%.

Industry Background

The pact takes place against a ongoing row between the sector and the ministers over spending levels and regulatory access.

The disagreement were heightened by arguments that US consumers were charged a premium for the identical medicines than people in the other developed nations.

Recently, several major drug company projects in the UK have been paused or cancelled, while major expansions have been directed toward American operations.

A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a share of its resources over the previous ten-year period.
